The World Cup Of Curling kicked off in Mississauga, Ontario. The first Grand Slam on the men's schedule features the top teams on the planet, including many teams making the trip to Vancouver in 2010. Alberta's big three were all in action on day one, and all came away with wins.
Alberta's big three—Kevin Martin, Randy Ferbey, and Kevin Koe—are all serious threats to win the Canadian Olympic trails in December. These three powerhouse teams will get to show off there talent at this week's Grand Slam against some of the teams they may face at the Olmypics.
Kevin Martin faced off against Sweden's Olympic representative, Niklas Edin. Martin easily took care of the young Swedes, winning the match 9-1 after just six ends.
Randy Ferbey was taking on the ever-dangerous Fengchun Wang from China. The Chinese curling teams have flown up the world standings over the past few seasons. But Ferbey managed to hold off Wang, beating the Chinese team 4-2.
The third Alberta team, skipped by Kevin Koe, was up against France's Thomas Dufour. Thanks to a steal of two in the final end, Koe pulled off a comfortable 7-4 victory over the French.
Other games during draw one included Glenn Howard, who downed Andy Kapp 9-5, and Brad Gushue, who fell to John Shuster of the United States, 4-3. Gushue is the only Canadian in the event with a loss on his record thus far.
The action continues Thursdays and continues until the championship game on Sunday, October 25th.
