The quarterfinal match between Stoughton and Howard was a defnesive gem, which does not mean it was void of good shots. In the very first end, after a heavy draw, Team Stoughton was able to softly nudge a Howard stone out of harm's way. After Brent Laing wrecks on his own rock, Stoughton was unable to capitalize on the error, allowing Howard a steal of one in the first.
Both teams played strong defensive games throughout the match, trading singles through the first five ends.
Stoughton's front end seemed to be his weakness against the strong Howard squad. Rob Fowler, Stoughton's second made a few errors on his way to curling only a 70%, which isn't good enough when there are a lot of rocks in play, as there were in this game. It also doesn't help that opposing super-skip Glenn Howard curled 100%.
Yes, 100%. This is not a typo. That's 16 near perfect shots.
Howard was able to respond in a big way after Stoughton scored the first deuce of the game in the sixth by making a huge takeout with his last rock to sent the Sleeman Centre crowd into a frenzy in racking up the three points needed to give Stoughton his first loss, 6-4.
