The Grand Slam finals are familiar territory for Glenn Howard. But for Brad Gushue, they're a little less common. But Newfoundland's top team will be headed back to The National final again this year, after toppling Glenn Howard 6-5 in the semi final.
Gushue commanded the game early. His team has been shooting very well all week, and have continued the trend in this game. After scoring a deuce in the second and then stealing two more in the fourht, Gushue and his rink from St. John's took a commanding 4-1 lead into the fourth end break.
Howard tried to get back in the game by scoring multiple point in the fifth, end Gushue's strong offensive play forced Howard to take just a single point.
This gave the hammer back to Gushue, providing a solid opportunity to increase his lead. After a failed double attempt, however, Gushue took a single point to extend his lead to 5-2.
The patience paid off for Howard in the seventh end. The end seemed to be going Gushue's way, but quickly turned in favour of Howard due to some missed shots. Howard executed a double take-out to score three points and tie the game.
In the final end, Howard had to make a perfect freeze to try to steal a point. The freeze attempt didn't curl enough, giving Gushue the one point and the victory.
The moves Gushue into the championship game of The National for the second year in a row. Last year Gushue faced Wayne Middaugh in the final. This year, he'll fave his old rival, Randy Ferbey.
