One of the best curlers of all time will be returning to the biggest stage is all of sport. On Sunday evening, Kevin Martin of Alberta triumphed over long-time rival Glenn Howard to earn himself the right to represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The match-up for this championship match was little surprise to anyone. Kevin Martin and Glenn Howard are the two most dominant teams in the world. They've ran into eachother in championship matches several times over the years. So when it came down to these two teams to represent Canada at the Olympics, all Canadians felt fairly confident regardless of who won.
In the first half of the game, Kevin Martin dominated play. He picked up a deuce with the hammer in the second end, and followed it up with a steal in the third. Then, after holding Howard to just a single point, Martin closed out the first half of the game with another deuce in the fifth. This game the Martin squad a comfortable 5-1 lead at the mid-point.
Despite Howard's best efforts, this deficit was just too much to overcome. Even with the help of scoring a deuce in the seventh, Howard could never catch up.
With a 7-3 lead in the tenth and final end, Kevin Martin ran Howard out of stones and was crowned the champion.
Canada's 2010 men's Olympic curling team consists of Kevin Martin, John Morris, Mark Kenedy and Ben Hebert. They'll be heading to Vancouver shortly after Christmas to prepare for the game.
As you may remember, Martin represented Canada at the 2002 Olympics, where he won a silver medal. In his own words, he wants to "take one more step up the podium" in 2010.
